AMERICAN PICTURES

My dad showed me American Pictures when I was a kid and I remember it had a profound effect on me. Jacob Holdt, a Danish photographer spent several years vagabonding across America in the 70’s, taking thousands of photographs of the mainly poor black families he stayed with along the way. The narratives are full of darkness, despair and desperation and it’s all seen with an honesty that cuts right through you like a knife. Many of the pictures and text are online here.

Great. Were a lot of the pictures on show? I hear Jacob does a roadshow too with some of the people in the images. Would love to see that.
